Howrah foundry cluster (West Bengal)
Introduction
Howrah district hosts about 3000 registered industrial units. They include about 320 foundries, of which 200 units are micro-sized producing about 100 tonnes per month; 80 are small units producing about 300 tonnes per month; and 40 units are medium-sized producing about 1000 tonnes per month. The foundries are mainly located in Liluah, Salkia, Belgachia, Dasnagar, Balitikuri, Jangalpur and Santragachi and provide direct employment to about 15,000 people. The cluster produces about one million tonnes of castings annually. The majority of foundries use coke-based divided blast cupolas for melting metal; some units use electrical induction furnaces.
