Hooghly mixed cluster (West Bengal)
Introduction
The district of Hooghly, West Bengal, has about 1000 registered industries, of which about 50 are large-scale units and over 950 are MSMEs. Most of the industrial units are located near the key state/national highways like Grand Trunk Road, Delhi Road and Durgapur Expressway in sub-urban towns like Konnagar, Nanagram, Serampore, Dankuni, Baidyabati, Bhadreswar, Chandannagar and Sankarbati. The industries represent sub-sectors like foundry, rolling mills, chemicals, plastic products, food products, and others. The foundry products are mainly used in engineering units, railway, and automobile sectors; rolling units produce both ‘long’ and ‘flat’ products (tubes, pipes, coils, etc.); the engineering units manufacture tractor/auto parts, agricultural machinery, industrial machinery, and jewellery; and the chemical units manufacture a wide range of products like rubber, resin, FRP, antioxidant, etc.
