Chennai forging cluster
Introduction
The city of Chennai (Tamil Nadu) has a cluster of about 50 forging units, of which 46 are MSMEs and the remaining 4 are large industries. The forging units are located in various industrial estates such as SIDCO Industrial Estate in Thirumudivakkam, Ambattur, Thirumazhisai, Ponneri, etc. The Chennai forging units are renowned for their ability to make precision auto components (70% of units) and non-auto components (30% of units). The products are supplied mainly to various large original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The major raw materials used in the Chennai forging units include carbon steel, alloy steel, and mild steel. The cluster provides employment to about 4500 people, directly or indirectly.
