The SAMEEEKSHA newsletter has crossed a milestone of sorts with the publication of its 50th issue in March 2023, 12 years after the first issue was brought out in December 2010. It is an appropriate moment to track the progress made in bringing about EE improvements in the MSME sector at a time when India is striving to achieve its ambitious target of becoming a net-zero economy by 2070. The theme article presents a bird’s eye view of some of the significant EE interventions and achievements in the MSME sector during 2011–2022. The issue also carries a summary of the 22nd Meeting of SAMEEEKSHA platform, held in Kolkata on 27th March 2023.

The theme of this issue is a GIZ-supported study project undertaken by TERI in six secondary steel sub-sectors: namely, foundry; forging; steel re-rolling (SRR); direct reduced iron (DRI, also known as sponge iron); electric arc furnace (EAF); and electric induction furnace (IF). The issue also summarizes the progress made by TERI and IGES under the ‘JITMAP’ initiative to promote high-efficiency environmental technologies (ETs) in India. It concludes with a summary of the 21st Meeting of SAMEEEKSHA platform, held at Raipur, Chhattisgarh on 18th November 2022.

The theme of this issue is just energy transition. The issue highlights key queries and challenges for which policy-makers must find answers and solutions while formulating a just energy transition strategy for India. It also underlines the need to undertake comprehensive studies to gather qualitative and quantitative data on the entire coal value chain, and outlines studies being undertaken by TERI in: (1) the coal mining industry, and (2) selected coal-dependent MSME sub-sectors.

The theme of this issue is the chemical industry, one of the energy intensive sectors studied by TERI under the BEE project titled ‘Energy and resource mapping of MSME clusters in India’. The first article presents a broad picture of the chemical industry, which includes a large number of MSMEs. The second article presents brief profiles of the Ahmedabad and Vapi chemical clusters that were studied under the project.

The theme of this issue is a project being undertaken by TERI to accelerate industrial decarbonization in India through relevant frameworks including policies, low carbon technology roadmaps, finance, corporate commitments, and generating demand for green products. The focus is on activities such as situation analyses and energy assessment studies being undertaken among MSMEs in the steel and allied industries sector, including the Raipur steel industry cluster.

This issue focuses on an innovative model for bilateral technology cooperation titled ‘Japan-India Technology Matchmaking Platform’ (JITMAP), designed and implemented by Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Japan and TERI to facilitate the transfer of low carbon technologies (LCTs) and best practices from Japan to India. It also carries a summary of a webinar on JITMAP held on 8th February 2022 to discuss the outcomes, lessons learned, and way forward.

This issue features the study by TERI of the refractory industry under the BEE energy mapping project. Also presented are highlights of the interactive workshop held to discuss mapping studies in brick, foundry, forging, paper, pharmaceutical, steel rerolling, glass & refractory industries.

This issue features the study by TERI of the textile industry under an International Energy Agency (IEA) project, with recommendations for a policy package to promote energy efficiency. Also presented are highlights of a national stakeholder consultation workshop held under the project.

This issue features the study by TERI of Ambala glassware cluster under the BEE energy mapping project. Also presented are the findings of detailed energy audits conducted on Ambala glassware units with recommended energy conservation measures (ECMs).

This issue presents strategies and actions to implement the Energy Conservation (EC) Guidelines for MSMEs prepared by BEE; and highlights of the study by TERI of Thane chemical industry cluster under the BEE energy mapping project.

This issue has as its theme, a program launched by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) titled ‘Energy and resource mapping of MSME clusters’, under which TERI has been entrusted with carrying out the energy and resource mapping exercise in two energy intensive sub-sectors: (1) glass & refractory, and (2) chemicals. It also summarizes the inception meeting organized by TERI together with Federation of Safety Glass (FOSG).

This issue focuses on the urgent need for decarbonizing the industry sector, describes the significant progress being made in ‘greening’ grid electricity in India, and summarizes studies conducted by TERI in five energy intensive MSME clusters under a project supported by SSEF, to assess the feasibility of replacing fossil-fuel-based technologies with electrical and RE-based options. It also summarizes the points made during an awareness workshop on electrification of industrial processes, organized by SSEF and TERI.
